PAW . . . is this week!

The week of March 25th through the 31st is our PAW, or Political Awareness Week. Throughout this week, the Young Dems, with the help of other student organizations, will put on a series of events that highlight some of the biggest issues currently facing our nation and the world. Expect a lot of good information and discussion from these events.

We’ll kickoff everything with a cookout and a date auction on Myers Quad on March 25th. Food and some of our hotter Young Dems will be on sale, and there will also be music and some other festivities. It should be a beautiful day, so be sure to come out for some food and fun.

On Wednesday, March 28th, the Young Dems will be showing the movie “Why We Fight.” Here’s a synopsis of the movie:

During World War II, the U.S. government commissioned a
series of propaganda films (some directed by Frank Capra)
entitled ‘Why We Fight.’ Now, filmmaker Eugene Jarecki turns that premise on its head, using the same title to take an incisive, unflinching look at the convention of warfare. Using as his starting point Dwight D. Eisenhower’s declaration that a responsible government “must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex,” Jarecki charges that in the current political climate, the government’s ambitions — stated or otherwise — in going to war are often starkly different from the best interests of its citizens. Why do we lack the sense of wartime purpose that previous generations proudly upheld? How large a role do political and corporate agendas play in influencing a U.S. call to arms? These questions and more are addressed in a powerful film that transcends polemical scapegoating, forcing us to confront a new brand of imperialism that cannot easily be justified or ignored.

Also, history professor Dr. John Morrow will be in attendance. For anyone who hasn’t seen Dr. Morrow speak, his presentations are amazing. You won’t want to miss this.

On Thursday, March 29th, there will be a discussion panel featuring members from Young Dems, College Republicans, Campus Greens, Roosevelt Institute, Students for Environmental Awareness, and the Georgia GuardDawg. A variety of topics will be discussed, and there promises to be some great debate.

Be sure to give you friends the 4-1-1 on all of these events, and make sure you yourself are in attendance, too!
